6. Tara Rejects Her Family (Season 5, Episode 6)
Tara first makes an appearance in the middle of Season 4, and though she strikes up a close relationship with Willow, she struggles to fit in with the rest of the group…at least to begin with.
In the sixth episode of Season 5, Tara’s family arrive in Sunnydale and demand she returns home immediately. Later, we learn that Tara’s family created a fake legend, which claims that all the women in their family have demonic powers. With a little help from Spike, the gang soon discover the truth, and Tara – despite her family’s persistence – refuses to leave.
This is a watershed moment for the young witch. By rejecting her toxic family and embracing the Scooby Gang, Tara is able to move on from her past and accept her true self. Amber Benson’s performance is fantastic here. She nails the transition from guilt and sorrow to relief and happiness, making us adore her even more than usual.
Tara’s arc may not be as remarkable as some of the other characters, but this scene doesn’t disappoint in terms of emotional impact.
