Ok so this is a bit of cheat, merging three moments into one, but it's impossible to separate these magnificent twists.

Despite all these moments being pretty much the same on paper, each one of them were truly unexpected and filled everyone watching with equal parts excitement and dread.

Firstly in Series 3's Utopia, The Master is reintroduced through Professor Yana, before the gut-wrenching reveal that he is also the enigmatic Harold Saxon, the newly-elected Prime Minister.

Secondly in Series 8's Dark Water, the mysterious Missy reveals herself as the rouge Time Lord, completely revolutionising the show's lore by confirming that a Time Lord can change gender through regeneration.

And thirdly, the shocking ending to Series 12's Spyfall Part One, saw The Master return again, this time masquerading as secret agent O.

Every time The Master returns, it's mindbogglingly brilliant, largely because of the outstanding acting quality of Derek Jacobi, John Simm, Michelle Gomez and Sacha Dhawan. They may not be the best villain The Doctor has faced, but is certainly the most entertaining, and all of these jaw-dropping revelations go a long way in helping that.

Here's to the next incarnation of The Master and their great unexpected introduction.
