10 Most Unexpected Doctor Who Moments
2. Ruth Is The Doctor
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Seven years after the revelation of The War Doctor, we were introduced to another unknown incarnation of the Time Lord.
This twist came completely out of nowhere. The Jodie Whittaker/Chris Chibnall era had produced very little in the way of game changing, extraordinary moments but ahead of Series 12's Fugitive Of The Judoon, audiences were told to expect something big. And when John Barrowman returned as Captain Jack, everyone assumed that was the end of the surprises.
But no. During the story we get our expectations subverted again when we learn Ruth, not her shifty partner, is the titular fugitive. We get little clues throughout about her true persona before the Doctor digs up a TARDIS and Ruth is revealed to be none other than The Doctor herself. Cue blown minds everywhere.
This was a truly outstanding and unexpected moment in Who history. While the pay-off of where exactly Ruth fits into the timeline is underwhelming, the initial reveal is simply jaw-dropping. Bold, brilliant and Doctor Who at its best.
In a series of a lot of lows, we at least had this fantastic high. Take a bow Chibnall. Probably the only time anyone will ever say that.
