10 Most Unexpected Doctor Who Moments
3. John Hurt Is The War Doctor
2013 celebrated 50 years of Doctor Who, so everyone was expecting big things from Stephen Moffat and the BBC, but no one could have foreseen this.
After a very muddled and confusing Series 7, the finale, The Name Of The Doctor, promised to answer some questions. It somewhat delivered on that, but the only part anyone really remembers is the ending.
We learn that during the Time War there was another Doctor, who committed such an atrocity that future incarnations chose to forget him. And most surprising of all, The War Doctor was played by the legendary John Hurt.
In recent years we have learned that this was a very last minute addition to the episode, with Moffat intending for Christopher Eccleston to return for the 50th Anniversary. But when he declined, he came up with the idea for there to be an additional secret Doctor, that existed in between the 1996 TV Movie and the 2005 revival. An ingenious solution that worked a treat.
It's a truly unforgettable moment, one that completely restructured the Whoniverse.
