10 Must-See New TV Shows Starting In February 2022
4. The Cuphead Show
Not so long ago, a video game adaptation was the last refuge of a creatively bankrupt scoundrel. Netflix’s The Witcher, however, helped to rehabilitate the format, and in The Cuphead Show we could just have the greatest property based on a game to date.
The series is based on the beloved and deeply weird 2017 game, a run-and-gun adventure famous for its humour, beautiful throwback technicolour graphics, and (less relevant to the TV version) its difficulty. It stars the titular half-man-half-crockery and his more cautious brother Mugman as they attempt to win back their souls from the Devil (having lost them in a casino). They’re tasked with collecting the souls of debtors in order to save their own, and embark on a monster hunting quest.
With the game’s creators Chad and Jared Moldenhauer acting as the series’ creative driving force, we can be confident that The Cuphead Show will replicate the wild and wacky style of its source material. It has already been commissioned for second and third seasons; it looks a safe bet for instant cult classic status.
