10 New 2013 TV Shows You Should Be Watching

10. Rectify

Rectify is a slow burn of a show, which might explain why critics love it but viewers haven't really discovered it yet. It's the story of a man named Daniel Holden, who served almost twenty years in prison for the rape and murder of his teenage girlfriend. He was given the death sentence, but due to new evidence, they released him. Now Daniel is in his late 30s, and has no concept of adult life outside of prison. He has to readjust to the outside world, all while dealing with the trauma of his time in prison and the ever present threat of being sent back. The pacing is slow but deliberate, and could probably best be described as a Southern Gothic. Aden Young does a spectacular job playing the enigmatic Daniel, who is slow to speak but has a lot going on in his head. It's sometimes heartbreaking, watching him trying to reclaim his former life, but it's always compelling. Rectify is an enthralling character piece that leaves a lot unsaid, but rewards the viewer who is willing to dig beneath the surface. Status: Renewed
