10 Once Awesome TV Shows That Now Suck

5. Sherlock

Sherlock The Blind Banker

Sherlock took the world by storm when it released in 2010, what with its sharp, modern overhaul of the classic Conan Doyle character. Benedict Cumberbatch took off as a major star, Martin Freeman went on to star in Peter Jackson's Hobbit Trilogy and, best of all, they did it while maintaining a consistent presence on the show.

Seasons one, two and, to a lesser extent, three, all boasted brilliant reviews, and for a while it seemed as though things would stay that way. While the third season did have its faults, there was a belief that what would follow would build on the quality of the show's stellar second series. A Christmas special soon followed, situated in Victorian London, before the fourth arrived in 2016. It wasn't good.

All the faults that had been identified in season three of Sherlock just seemed to have escalated to the point of parody last year, with the final episode in particular having completely turned away from the series' semi-realistic footing. There was an evil lair, cooky death traps, a bizarre sibling reveal and an even weirder climax.

It just wasn't the show that fans had grown to love in its first few years, and, although Toby Jones' turn in The Lying Detective was indeed good, it was the only episode of the season that deserved any kind of plaudit.

It's painful to think of it, but maybe, just maybe, things should have ended with the Reichenbach Falls...
