10 Origins Of Star Trek Props You Won't Believe

9. Jem'Hadar Rifles

CBS And Remco

The Jem'Hadar Rifles from Deep Space Nine are another example of the prop department turning a random toy into a convincing alien weapon. This time, they used a toy crossbow, specifically a Remco Crossbow And Arrows toy from the '90s.

The Remco toy was very similar to a Nerf gun, with foam darts that could be launched using a simple mechanical system. The Jem'Hadar rifles were made by flipping the crossbow on its side, removing its spikes, adding a new handle, and giving the whole thing a metallic paint-job (as well as a few other minor changes).

The prop was actually also used earlier, in season one of Deep Space Nine, as the weapon of the Hunters trying to catch Tosk in the episode Captive Pursuit. This earlier version of the prop still included the two spikes coming out of the barrel, which gave it a more crossbow-like appearance. The Jem'Hadar version was made to look much more dissimilar to the Remco toy.
