6. Working Stiff

Many times a fictional psychopath will fit into one of two categories when it comes to their profession: Eccentric, high-class socialite dividing his time between the opera and his castle-like mansion or bottom-tiered loner living in an isolated shack with dead animals hanging over the porch. Dexter sets himself apart because we get to see him actually earning a living and doing it in a job that lets him be a better killer. Dexter is not a blood-splatter analyst who spends his off hours as a serial killer. He is a serial killer who spends his off hours as a blood spatter analyst. And the only reason he bothers to drag himself into the office is because it is all part of disguise. It allows him to manipulate the system to throw authorities off of his trail and destroy evidence so killers go free so he can take care of it personally. When we get down to it, a good amount of the fun of the show comes from watching Dexter in his Costner-esqu ballet via No Way Out as he stays ten steps ahead of the rest of the police department.
