10 Reasons Murder House Is The Best Season Of American Horror Story
6. Jessica Lange's First Role
Looking back at that first season, did anyone really think that Murder House would make a small-screen star out of silver screen starlet Jessica Lange? Her part as scorned housewife Constance Langdon was suitably understated, and with Murphy himself reportedly being a huge fan of the actress, he wrote the role specifically for her.
Lange has had many great parts in her time on American Horror Story, but none have been as unhinged as her first role as Constance. There was always something unsettling/loveable about the cougar next door, but she proved herself smarter than she looked. Constance trod that line between mother and murderer: from shooting her husband, to covering for her deranged family, and knowing the truth about the house, it was all there.
However, it wasn't always meant to be that way for Lange. Intended as a small part, Murphy considerably re-wrote Constance to play a much larger role in the season after seeing Lange's skills on the set. By the time Murder house bowed out, Constance was at the centre of all the drama from the house to become pretty much the sole survivor of the horror.
The story of the remaining Langdons was always left open-ended, while Constance was one of the few Horror Story characters (from any season) to escape without punishment. Lange may not be heading back to Horror Story anytime soon, however, she remains the unofficial queen of American Horror Story - thanks in no small part to her premiere role as Constance.
