10 Reasons Television Innovation Is At A Dead-End

2. Nobody Wants A TV Anymore

Who watches TV anymore. No, really, who actually sits down and watches what€™s on, when it€™s on? We all Sky+ things or watch them on Virgin on demand, or BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Instant etc. We rarely sit in front of the screen and say €œwhat€™s on€. It€™s €œwhat have we got in the planner€. The digital switchover means most people now at least have some PVR or catch up service. We bemoan the fact that we can€™t just see any show we want, when we want it and some resort to nefarious means to get them. Driving a lot of this is the rise of tablet use, so that people who would feel uncomfortable with computers are now happy to browse the relevant movie store or streaming service. More and more people are forgoing their televisions and laptops and sitting instead on the couch with their Surface, iPad or Android tablet watching Youtube videos, a show on catch-up or using one of the aforementioned services. Large screen televisions have their place but with more people using them less frequently the big thing taking up so much space on your wall or in the corner starts to look redundant. The idea that you would replace it with a larger 4K display costing thousands just to not watch that either, would seem laughable.

I.T. Consultant, technophile and Doctor Who fan. I like to talk about tech, take films apart and make excuses for Doctor Who's continuity errors. No other show has the power to make me feel like a big kid.
