So, wise guy? Whats your big idea huh? Well, since you asked; there is absolutely still a market for TVs and big ones at that, but beyond 4K there is no real benefit to upping the resolution after taking size and limitations into account. Instead TV companies should be, and most are, investing heavily in projection technology. If any wall in your house can produce a 4K display at anything from 66 up to 147 when you want it, why would you put a special place on your living room wall for a box, however pretty? As tablets, smartphones, 'phablets' (phone/tablets) etc become more ubiquitous, and some of their resolutions already match 4K, the desire to have an always there large screen TV diminishes. Its far too early to say that TVs have had their day, but theyve certainly entered a crossroads. By the time OLED is ready to hit proper mass-production, projectors could be smaller, lighter, quieter, affordable and creating 4K laser images on any wall. To paraphrase Joey from Friends; what will you point the furniture at?
I.T. Consultant, technophile and Doctor Who fan. I like to talk about tech, take films apart and make excuses for Doctor Who's continuity errors. No other show has the power to make me feel like a big kid.
