You know the story, you walk into the aunt, uncle, parents or friends house and you see it straight away. It hits you like a bad smell and you reel backwards involuntarily yet they dont seem to notice the heinous crime being committed...theyre watching the SD version of a channel thats available in HD. What are you doing? you cry as you grab the remote and turn to the HD version. You stand there triumphant, having made their life better. Except you havent. They shrug and say I dont see the difference. Are these really the market for a 65 4K TV? This is not snobbery, a large percentage are genuinely unconcerned with the overall picture quality, they are perfectly happy with the picture they have. With smaller screens and sitting further away, the extra resolution isnt as large a factor. Heres how it works: 37 and under, HD-Ready 720p is fine. Up to 60 or so, 1080p is necessary and 55 over is suitable for 4K (assuming a standard sized living room sitting 2-3m away). The majority of TVs sold in the UK are 42 or less so the extra cost of 4K is something the majority will be unwilling to pony up for, because they dont see the difference.
I.T. Consultant, technophile and Doctor Who fan. I like to talk about tech, take films apart and make excuses for Doctor Who's continuity errors. No other show has the power to make me feel like a big kid.
