Producers love a proof of concept. And in the case of a possible 'Star Trek: Janeway', they've already created it.

Star Trek: Picard proved that not only is it possible to build a show around a legacy character, but there's also an audience appetite for it. It's hard to appreciate just how difficult it is to create a new concept within a long-running franchise, and we've seen only too well that it's impossible to please everyone. However, by bringing together beloved legacy characters, fresh faces and contemporary stories, Project Janeway would be following a blueprint that Picard has already tried and tested.

While there were lessons to be learnt from earlier episodes, the series found its rhythm and voice, and by the time Picard had reunited with his old crew, it felt like the moment had been earned. And if this is a formula that Team Star Trek are keen to follow, then Janeway is the perfect candidate for a continuation (along with family Torres-Paris please).

Picard also created an ideal set-up for passing the baton. In the series finale, Seven is promoted to captain, her final redemption in a story arc that has spanned decades. And it's delivered by none other than her old friend, Tuvok. It feels like there's a blank space on a script just waiting for the words: Enter Janeway.
