10 Rick & Morty Fates Worse Than Death
2. Using The Load Save Device
When Morty gets angry at Rick for never acknowledging any of his ideas, Rick reluctantly agrees to give Morty access to a concept he's always wanted to try: a device that allows you to save a point in time and restart from it later as many times as you want, just like in a video game.
Morty uses this power to his advantage to get into various shenanigans without having to suffer the consequences, but soon he ends up falling in love. Morty and his unnamed girlfriend end up in a traumatising plane crash and have to spend weeks marooned in the arctic.
Miraculously however, he manages to get rescued and reunite with his family, having become a better person in the process... until Jerry mistakes the device for the TV remote, and resets Morty all the way back to before he met his girlfriend. Argh!
However, it gets worse when Rick reveals how the device really works. It doesn't transport you back in time when you load a save, it shunts you into a parallel dimension where you replace the version of you that lived there up until that point, killing them in the process. This means Morty died hundreds of times while using the device, over and over again, and it was all a cruel lesson from Rick to show how little respect he has for time travel.
