This is technically cheating.

However, there is no sadder moment than when the Doctor has to regenerate. It doesn't matter which incarnation is forced to change, you're still left feeling mortified that they will no longer be with us.

The Doctor is such a wonderful, courageous, and outright puzzling individual, so naturally we grow attached to each of their personas, and their various extensions of the Doctor's wonderful personality. Regeneration has led to so many heart-breaking sequences throughout Doctor Who's long history, all dedicated to sending off our beloved Time Lord.

Although this moment has become a staple of Doctor Who, it doesn't excuse the fact that it's simply saddening, whilst also being exciting because we're about to welcome a new version of the Doctor. This inventive process has allowed the show to continue for nearly sixty years, as well as keep the show, and it's titular character, fresh through their many iterations. But why does change have to be so sad?
