10 Saddest Doctor Who Moments

5. Jamie And Zoe Forgetting The Doctor

The end of the Second Doctor's tenure was tantalisingly important in moving the show forward. Not only was Doctor Who about to move to colour television, but it was about to re-evaluate it's approach in producing stories. Doctor Who would be moving away from space adventures, and become a more grounded series, through Earth-bound narratives alongside UNIT.

On top of this, we would see all three of the regular TARDIS crew members depart at the conclusion of The War Games. This was particularly saddening, especially in the way this came about. Given the Second Doctor was put on trial by the Time Lords, and his companions were forced to return home against their will.

Jamie McCrimmon had been the Second Doctor's companion since his second outing, The Highlanders, and had stayed loyally by his side ever since. To have the Time Lords come along and snatch away that friendship was in among itself cruel, but to have his memory wiped in the process really rubbed more salt in the wound.

This made The War Games a difficult one to swallow due to there being so many forced changes thrown at us, bringing the 1960s to a bitter end. Of course seeing Zoe Heriot robbed of her ever-growing progression as a strong female companion was another kick in the teeth.
