10 Saddest TV Character Exits That Made You Cry

1. The Tenth - Doctor Who

Doctor Who The End of Time David Tennant
BBC Studios

Everyone has their favourites, but David Tennant's role as The Tenth Doctor is widely recognised as one of the best. Not just of the modern revival either, but of all time.

It's no surprise then, that fans were so sad to see him go. He'd already delivered an emotional wallop when he left Rose on that beach, but his own exit topped that and then some. We're used to the Doctor regenerating, but not like this.

Tenth's final few episodes see him and the series take a darker turn. He goes rogue, meddling with the timeline in ways he knows he shouldn't. Not only is he not going down without a fight, he's not going down. He won't regenerate. He refuses.

He can have his wish too. He's beaten the Master, it's all over. Then Wilf knocks four times. Bernard Cribbins' loveable granddad even tells The Doctor to just leave, and he so badly wants to. He could do so much more. But what kind of a doctor leaves a man to die?

In saving Wilf, he dooms himself and staggers towards his TARDIS as an operatic score rings out. Then he leaves us on that haunting line... 'I don't want to go'.
