5. Momma, No! - For Whom The Wedding Bells Toll
http://youtu.be/IPeDAFTgPTA The night before Lisa and Will's second attempt at marriage, they send Lisa's father and Will's mother off to a restaurant so they can bond and get to know one another. Well they certainly did that alright, as later that evening Will discovers them in bed together. Part of the charm of The Fresh Prince was that they weren't afraid to be over-the-top in the comedy stakes. Yes, the story lines were sometimes far-fetched and the characters were larger than life, but they didn't take themselves seriously and that's why it worked. How can we not love Will's devastation at his Mother's discrepancy? Sex in the show was always referred to in a tasteful manner and never impinged upon the family aspect of the audience. It was always implied or indirectly referred to in a way that adults could laugh at it and children thought it was funny despite the joke going over their heads. Even a character like Jazzy, who ran the risk of coming across as a sleazeball, appeared cartoonish and wolfish at worst, making this a show that all the family could watch together without awkward questions being raised. Will's mother was a valuable supporting character in the series, providing a welcome grounding and dose of social reality whenever she appeared. This was always a positive move, as the show did run the risk from time of falling into cliché, with the streetwise upstart and the aspirational, spoilt Bankses. Will's mother was a layered and rich character, a reminder that the streets of Philadelphia were still tough and ridden with poverty, but the family bond remained as strong as ever.
