93 Million people watched the finale of Cheers, and that's more than the population of the UK. They could even have invited the entire populations of Sweden, Norway, Finland and our Irish neighbours to watch and still not hit that target. Now, that can give producers an ego. The kind of ego that can lead to bad decisions. Poor investment choices, fast cars and commissioning TV shows based on bad ideas... Yet now our producers needed a spin off. Keep the momentum up. Pick a character any character. It is rich pickings. We could of had Woody the barman going solo, Carla opening up her own place and even the comedy bantering of Cliff and Norm. They pick Frasier. The dull one. The one audiences never really connected with. The one that was actually not that funny. What the hell where they thinking? Ego is a powerful thing. Now even great characters from very successful shows can make lousy spin offs as the Friends spin-off Joey demonstrates to perfection. Quite why they thought this would work is anyone's guess. But what do we know? Voted best sitcom ever by British viewers in a Channel 4 poll and 34th best ever by TV Guide the series certainly made a mark on the comedy landscape. So a fantastic show, a million awards (approximate figure), and a small dog upstaging everyone later... I bet you can see their egos from space.
