10 Star Trek Episodes They Should Have Made (It's Never Too Late)
4. Decker's Glory Days
The Doomsday Machine can be a tough watch. It's a great episode of Star Trek, but the demise of Commodore Matt Decker is heart-wrenching. Watching him break down after losing his crew to the planet killer, only to throw his own life away in an attempt to quiet the pain and deliver vengeance...it's brutal.
Even sadder is that we never got the chance to meet him as the fine officer we're sure he once was. The respect Kirk shows him...the mettle he finds even in crisis...his loyalty to his crew...his regard for the burden of command...Decker seems like a good officer who was dealt a horrible hand.
So it would be nice to have at least one adventure with Decker set before The Doomsday Machine, where we can see him at his best rather than as the broken man Kirk discovers in the wreck of his ship. Yes, it would be a poignant watch, knowing what his future held, but at least we'd have spent some quality time with him before tragedy strikes.
And the beauty of this one is that Strange New Worlds or any future spin-off that might arise (fingers crossed) could legitimately make this happen. A joint mission with the Constellation isn't all that hard to imagine. We just ask that Decker be treated kindly...he's got enough to contend with later down the line.
