10 Star Trek Foods We Wish Were Real
3. Romulan Ale
Three things to remember about Romulan ale: It’s blue. It’s illegal. It’s a very bad idea.
Though it was legal in the Federation at least during the Dominion War, when the Alpha Quadrant was united against the Dominion, Romulan ale (not dissimilar from Romulan whiskey or kali-fal has otherwise been illegal for centuries. In fact, there’s hardly any mention of it in the canon without someone hastily adding, then immediately disregarding, that it’s banned in the Federation.
That said, it seemed that the drink’s appeal was one of very few things Romulans, humans, and Klingons could agree on, and Romulan ale was one of few things capable of knocking Klingons flat on their backsides.
During Riker and Troi’s wedding reception, Worf sat at a table, cradling his aching head. He groaned that Romulan ale should be illegal, and Geordi, amused, hastily points out that it is.
But look how blue it is! Who could resist? Maybe that’s why Romulans are always so grouchy – constant hangovers from that tempting forbidden ale.
