Star Trek: Starfleet Academy in fact has one of the longest gestating periods of any series in Trek history, with producer Harve Bennett first approaching the idea for a potential sixth film in the late eighties. Since then, it saw a sort of realization in J.J. Abram's 2009 film, though another series has been rumoured in the current slate. There is nothing confirmed though out of all Trek spin-offs, this is the rumour that refuses to die.

All the way back in 1968, Gene Roddenberry spoke to a convention about an idea for a young Kirk and Spock at the Academy. The series then went quiet until the above Harve Bennett idea, though seems to be possible again. Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, of Dynasty, Gossip Girl and Runaways fame, are reportedly developing a Starfleet Academy series. There are no details yet available.

A project that is more real is the three-part, Nicholas Meyer penned Ceti Alpha V. The show is in limbo, though the script exists. Meyer spoke on the project, claiming that while the idea was strong, the cost of a mini-series was off-putting for the studio. Coupled with this was the issue of rights. Up until 2019, the film and television rights for Star Trek were split.

However, the Viacom merger has fixed this issue, which means that the stage could be set for the series to go ahead. As it stands, there is apparently a fantastic script exploring the years between Space Seed and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, though no one is likely to see it for some time to come.
