10 Star Trek TV Shows And Movies Currently In The Works
2. Quentin Tarantino's Star Trek Project
Karl Urban once described the Tarantino idea for Star Trek as 'bananas'. That seems like a good place to start with would will definitely be the first R rated Trek.
Quentin Tarantino first pitched an idea to J.J. Abrams about doing a Star Trek film almost four years ago. Screenwriter Mark L. Smith dropped several hints that James T. Kirk would be the primary focus of their film.
And Kirk is always just so fun. Tarantino and I had so much fun with him, because Kirk is just William Shatner, y’know?
In this earlier interview with Deadline, Tarantino suggested that he may not actually direct the film, but that he would remain involved.
I will say one thing about Star Trek that I’ve been waiting for someone to bring up. I don’t know if I’ll do it or not. I’ve got to figure it out, but Mark wrote a really cool script. I like it a lot. There’s some things I need to work on but I really, really liked it.
The Original Series episode A Piece of the Action, where Kirk and Spock visit Sigma Iota to discover a mob-like world, is one of the inspirations behind this new script's direction. Lastly, Tarantino confused us all with his comments about which timeline his story would feature in:
I don’t know how much I can say. The one thing I can say is it would deal with the Chris Pine timeline.
Then, in that same interview:
Now, I still don’t quite understand – and J.J. can’t explain it to me, and my editor has tried to explain it to me and I still don’t get it…Something happened in the first movie that kind of wiped the slate clean? I don’t buy that. I don’t like it. I don’t appreciate it.
Whenever the film arrives and whatever form it will take, there does at least seem to be a lot of passion and fun in the script!
