10 Striking Similarities Between GLOW And Orange Is The New Black
1. The Triumphant Tone
All of the aforementioned characteristics are supposed to make the viewer cheer for the ladies. The wrestlers are expected to tape their show despite the obstacles, while the inmates need to keep their humanity and have their moments of triumph whenever possible.
In real life the good guys might not always win, but cheering for the characters is natural, and eventually validated. Whether it's Debbie's final jump in GLOW or the lake scene in the last episode of season three in OITNB, these short flashes of uninterrupted happiness and victory validate the time and emotions invested in the characters.
It's OK to laugh at the women, to see their failures and flaws exposed, but in the end, they need to emerge triumphant, if only for a brief moment. For all their struggles, they just deserve to win. Once again, these moments don't come off as pathetic or out of place, thanks to great writing and character creation.
