10 Striking Similarities Between GLOW And Orange Is The New Black
2. The Bravery
Both shows tackle serious topics, like stereotypes, racism and gender inequality. All of these have been written about in the previous entries, but there's really not enough praise to bestow on the writers for their ability to insert these issues into the narrative without them feeling forced or out of place.
For example, Ruth's abortion is presented with humor, but the situation still feels very serious thanks to the doctor performing it. Her questions undermine the very light-hearted buildup to the whole thing. When it comes to OITNB, it constantly balances on the line between humor and seriousness. For a good example look no further than episode nine of the last season, which is mocking horror tropes in its form, but the content - especially the final revelation - is very serious and scary.
Both shows are partially comedies, but that doesn't mean that they have to play it safe. Instead, they use the not-so-serious label to convey very powerful and emotional messages.
