10 Terrifying Batman: The Animated Series Episodes That Gave You Nightmares

9. Never Fear

Let's get the controversy out of the way, this is an episode that isn't about fear directly or truly horrific acts. It has Scarecrow as the main villain, but the premise is the absolute opposite of Scarecrow's usual methods. Instead of making people face their greatest fears, the gimmick this time is that the toxin removes all fear, and Batman gets dosed!

Scarecrow episodes are some of the most terrifying ones in BTAS mainly because they directly deal with fears. However, this one is particularly unique in that it is about the absence of fear and how that can prove to be just as harmful.

As a kid, the primary source of terror behind this episode was almost too simple: Scarecrow's redesign for the New Batman Adventures. Tall and menacing like a zombie undertaker, scarecrow prowled around like a walking nightmare - an effect made even better by Jeffrey Combs' sinister performance as the character.

Terrifyingly enough, as an adult, the terror that comes from seeing Batman lose control over himself is somehow even worse.
