10 Terrifying Doctor Who Monsters That Had Us Hiding Behind The Sofa
2. The Weeping Angels - Various Appearances
Yeah, obviously. No surprises here (though you may be surprised they’re not in the top spot)…
The Angels are without any doubt the scariest reoccurring monster in the history of Doctor Who, and the best villain that has been introduced in 17 years of NuWho. They became notorious even outside the fandom after their first appearance in Blink, and deservedly so.
‘Quantum locked’ creatures that can only move when they aren’t being observed, the very nature of these monsters results in incredible tension in every single scene they appear, not to mention jump scares galore. Their design is superb as well, as is the scoring for their appearances, with the orchestral stings that punctuate their movements greatly increasing the power of the jump scares. The Angels made an entire generation of people afraid of statues, and they could easily hold up a fully fledged adult horror film on their own.
So why are they number two? Because Steven Moffat doesn’t know when to stop, consistently tweaking with these already perfect monsters with progressively diminishing results. The Angels really jumped the shark when Moff decided to turn the Statue of Liberty into one…
Then again, Village Of The Angels saw a big return to form for these guys (thank you Chibs), so there’s hope yet…
