10 The Simpsons Episodes That PISSED People Off

3. No Good Read Goes Unpunished (S29 E15)

Every Man's Dream The Simpsons
20th Century

Whereas the likes of Family Guy, Rick and Morty, and South Park have often actively sought out offensive themes and episodes in order to benefit from shock value, The Simpsons has always stood on the side of family friendly. The show did find itself neck deep in controversy in 2018, however.

The problem came with Hank Azaria's portrayal of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon. The show was hit with great criticisms around how the character was brought to life in a stereotypically insensitive and offensive fashion. It was how the show dealt with these criticisms that got fans angry.

In 'No Good Read Goes Unpunished', the issue was addressed through the medium of Marge trying to make a bedtime story less offensive. When asking her daughter what she should do, the writers essentially spoke through Lisa in saying that essentially, they had done nothing wrong. This was inoffensive when it began before becoming politically incorrect, so what were they supposed to do about it?

Not only were fans outraged at the show's response to its critics, they weren't happy that Lisa was the character they used to try and shut them down. Lisa has always been an activist for social justice, even going so far as to create a new line of less sexist, less stereotypical, and less problematic Malibu Stacey dolls. She would be the absolute last person in Springfield that would have brushed off a conversation about racism and diverse representation in such a back handed way.
