10 Things We Learned From Twin Peaks: The Return Part 11
5. The Evil Is (Literally) Spilling Out
Part 8 ended with a grotesque amphibian/insect hybrid harvesting itself into the mouth of an embodiment of innocence. "This is the water, and this is the well," instructed the Woodsman-as-siren, beckoning the creature to penetrate and pollute this girl and the age she represented.
There is a thematic callback to this narratively unconnected scene in Part 11. Bobby is removed from his sombre recollection of a live once lived by a bullet shattering a RR window. He instructs the patrons to get down and emerges onto the road. There is no crime to intercept, or even to report; a young boy, dressed identically to his careless, camouflaged father in a visual metaphor of the sense of fatalism coursing through the story, stole it from his unwitting parents. In a chaotic scene with intense sound design mirroring Fire Walk With Me, an unseen driver honks her horn ceaselessly.
It is revealed to be a rotund, hysterical woman screeching "Why is this happening?!" while practically headbanging into her steering wheel. From the passenger seat emerges a drastically sick young girl, vomiting green bile in a disturbing but somehow hilarious echo of The Exorcist.
If that beguiling climax to Part 8 represented the inception of evil, this blackly comedic aside might represent the birth of it - it is spewing forth into the town of Twin Peaks, as the person closest to her can only react with a series of short, mystified screams.
