10 Things We Learned From Twin Peaks: The Return Part 15
3. A Beautiful Sendoff
Catherine E. Coulson died weeks into production. She managed to film some scenes as the iconic 'Margaret Log Lady' Lanterman' before succumbing to cancer.
In part 15, the Log Lady died. She departed with some final prescient words - watch out for the man under the moon at Blue Pine Mountain - and confirmed that "her log is turning gold. The wind is moaning. I'm dying." Hawk preserved her dignity with a stoic "Good night, Margaret." The frailty of her voice was enough to spark tears. Lynch slowly but sincerely eased the nozzle when Hawk informed his colleagues at the Sheriff's Department, the night moon obscured by clouds. Sheriff Truman removed his hat in a gesture of respect. Lucy received the news with a tearful bow of the had. A sombre Badalamenti arrangement soundtracked what was a respectfully-pitched tearjerker.
Coulson received an In Memory Of credit for Part 1. Margaret Lanterman received the In Memoriam treatment for Part 15. As David Lynch wrote in his touching obituary, she was the Log Lady. She even kept her log throughout the years, hoping she would one day have use for it. That she did is a small, good thing in death.
