10 Things Wrong With American Horror Story: Coven

5. Stevie Nicks Wonders In For No Good Reason

We love her. She's Stevie Nicks! She's the white witch. She suits this season perfectly. But why exactly did she show up? The synopsis said that Fiona brought her old friend, Stevie Nicks to the coven in order to cox Misty Day into being the supreme. Fiona does this because she wants to know if Misty Day is the supreme and if she is, kill her. But in the world of black and white, Stevie Nicks walks in, says the line "Hi, I'm Stevie Nicks", which results in Misty fainting, she then does two duos and that's it. Nothing comes of it. Sure, the last duo - her rendition of 'Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?' - was amazing and brought us all to tears but why was she there? This goes back to the point of bringing Patti LuPone in - it's because Murphy has a huge sense of respect for Nicks and a want to work with her. So much, that he wrote her into an episode, forgetting about the plot and forgetting about its consistency. Did having Nicks in the show move the plot along? No. Did it have any bearing on the story? No. In a mini series it's evident that everything counts, every person, every story, every line has to matter. A mini series doesn't have the luxury of having a flop episode - they have thirteen episodes, each one matters. So to have this tribute to Stevie Nicks episode seems a waste. She brought tears to our eyes, she made us rush through our old records to play on repeat but she did nothing to the show. It's sad because she could have had a crucial role in the season - admittedly she was introduced close to the end, meaning they would have another case of needing to wrap up a story-line quickly again but if they were slower and smarter and had given themselves more room, it could have worked.
