10 Things You Didn't Know About Archer

4. The Original Voice of Sterling Archer Was Supposed to Be Adam Reed

Adam Reed had voiced multiple characters in his previous show, Frisky Dingo, so it felt natural that he would voice Sterling Archer, as well. However, after they recorded the episode with him in the role, they felt his voice was "flat."

Therefore, they had to look for someone else to play the part. FX apparently had a list of dramatic actors that they felt looked like Archer, but Reed pushed for H. Jon Benjamin and he ultimately got his way.

After the recast, Reed had no intention of voicing any other characters in the series, looking to focus only on the behind-the-camera stuff, but he eventually ended up playing Ray Gillette. He was the last of the main characters to be created, so instead of trying to cast someone last minute, the producers felt that giving the role to Reed would be easier.

Over the twelve-season run, Archer has become so identified with Benjamin's voice that it's impossible to imagine him sounding any different. Can you close your eyes and picture him saying "Danger zone!" in Gillette's voice? It doesn't work, does it?
