10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Mr. Robot
3. Realistic Hacks
Hacking has had a terrible history of representation in entertainment. From 90s cringe classics like Hackers and The Net to more modern movie mishaps such as Blackhat and Open Windows, hacking and hacker culture have been all but bastardized in storytelling.
A major narrative focal point of Mr. Robot is its focus on the world of hacking. It's the crux of the whole show, and unlike the movies above, the series avoids almost every pitfall that befalls hacking stories.
To make sure the hacking was portrayed realistically, Esmail and technology producer Kor Adana went the extra mile to make sure it was gotten just right. Adana had previously worked in cybersecurity, and on his team of consultants was Marc Rogers, a professional hacker who made a name for himself in the 90s. The hacks are tested before being worked into the script in order to insure as much authenticity as possible.
This might seem a bit excessive, but when you think about it, who'd want to watch a four season show where the people behind it had no idea what they were doing?
