10 Times Doctor Who Appeared In Other TV Shows

1. The Simpsons (And Futurama)

The Simpsons almost contains too many Doctor Who shoutouts to mention, with creator Matt Groening said to be a huge fan of the show.

The first time the Whoniverse made the trip over to Springfield was in the Season 7 episode Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming, when Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor is called in as part of the "Esteemed Representatives Of Television".

Since then, we've seen a TARDIS in Season 24's Love Is A Many-Splintered Thing, Daleks in Season 23's Holidays Of Future Passed, and even more Tom Baker in Season 10's Mayored To The Mob, among a host of other winks and nods.

Speaking of Tom Baker, he's also popped up in another Groening-verse show, Futurama: once in Season 6's Möbius Dick, and again in Season 8's All The Presidents' Heads. The latter episode, rather grimly, also features a disembodied head in a jar, complete with the name plaque "Amelia Pond".

This obviously begs the question: what the hell happened to Rory?!

It speaks to the power and reach of Doctor Who that the makers of The Simpsons are genuine fans of it, and with the animated classic likely to stretch on until the heat death of the universe, there will surely be tons more Doctor Who references to come.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
