10 Times Futurama Blew It

3. Neutopia

Comedy Central
Recollect how many of these features sound familiar to you: helpless characters stuck on an inhabitable planet, an omnipotent entity pitting its live toys against each other, gender-swapping hero(es), and the exploration of gender relationships. If all of them ring 'been there, seen that' then you've watched one of the most derivative Futurama episodes ever conceived. An unoriginal form aside, Neutopia itself is quite a disturbing affair. Zapp Brannigan's fluids of animal lust that he casually emanates in every single episode, were apparently increased tenfold and made the overtone of the episode. It is full of unhealthy kinkiness stemming from the very idea of meddling with characters' gender for the sake of low-brow jokes. It's even worse how it was sold under the pretext of something that deals with gender stereotypes and sexism. On the contrary, the sexless creature's quest for the knowledge of sex turned out to be nothing more than a plot device for making a hella lot of off-putting jokes. It's gross and doesn't even have a meaningful conclusion: no answers were given, and everything got back normal without any everlasting impact. At least Bend Her gaves us a touching resolution. This one? Zero substance.

Ilya Matsnev hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
