10 Times Larry David Went Too Far On Curb Your Enthusiasm
1. Going Into Business
Curb Your Enthusiasm’s most recent season is one long example of Larry going too far. After catching a ban from former pal Mocha Joe’s new coffee shop, Larry leaps straight into action: he will build a spite store, a rival cafe right next to his foe’s, with the intention of driving Joe out of business.
This is the through line of season 10, and as far as Larry’s plans go, it’s one of his better executed. He puts a lot of thought into his spite store, with new advances in urinal technology to avoid splashback, hand sanitiser on every table (which coincided nicely with its pandemic-era release) and a strict no defecating rule.
Indeed Larry seems built for the commerce game, as the spite store idea quickly catches on. Mila Kunis, Sean Penn, and Jonah Hill all cameo as themselves, aggrieved celebrities with the means to launch similarly petty businesses.
As with all of Larry’s ploys this one blows up in due course, but he takes this idea to the limit. Given he only gets into the cafe game for petty purposes, he does a pretty bang up job.
