10 Times Lazy Writing Ruined Netflix's You Season 2
2. The "California Being A Prison For New Yorkers" Cliche
In yet another overused cliché, throughout this season Joe makes semi-regular suggestions that having to live in Los Angeles is punishment enough for his multitude of wrongdoings.
You see, Joe is a New Yorker, which means he absolutely HAS to hate California, as is prescribed by any show about someone in LA who grew up in New York. He’s a hipster, but not an annoying California plastic hipster. He likes real books, written by real people, who have experienced real weather. He has no time for quinoa smoothies, only black coffee and sulking.
This concept is really ramped up in the season finale, when we skip forward in time to find Joe living with a heavily pregnant Love and her mother in the suburbs. Joe describes this as a prison of his own making and believes that he’s well and truly gotten his just deserts.
How could things possibly be any worse? Sun, sand, palm trees, a loving spouse with a child on the way, a big house, financial security and a hot, blonde neighbour sunbathing next door? Sounds like Hell.
Seriously- send Joe to live in Paisley for a week and see how much he hates Los Angeles then.
