It was a heartbreaking moment for all Lostians when Charlie became the island's next victim at the end of season 3. The only comfort given was that his death was a noble sacrifice that saved everyone back on the island. Or was it? Charlie's death was built up for some time, as Desmond's ability to predict the future revealed that Charlie was destined to die no matter how many times that he tried to prevent it. Charlie decided to let it happen when he learnt that his actions would allow the island to send out a radio signal to a nearby boat, seemingly getting all his friends finally rescued. What Desmond's vision didn't reveal was that the boat the survivors managed to contact was full of Charles Widmore's people, who had very little interest in rescuing the survivors and had no intention of leaving the island until they'd carried out their own work, which involved a lot of murder and violence. So poor Charlie's sacrifice? Not worth it in the slightest.
