At every possible opportunity, the numbers appear throughout the show. Hurley won the lottery with them (which opened a Pandora's box of bad luck), each number relates to one of the candidates, and they're found engraved on the wall of the hatch. There's no mistaking their significance. But it's never explained where they came from or what exactly they represent. It's assumed that they're a bad omen rather than a good one, given how Hurley's research showed that everyone who had used the numbers seemed to be surrounded by death and misery, given him an understandable fear of them. They were a great plotline throughout the seasons and a great way to engage the audience, as they were constantly on the look out for a reference to the numbers. But it's a bit of a slap to the face for the viewers to spend so much time debating their origin and their significance, only to never find out the answer.
