6. Rachel - Community

Rachel debuted in Season 4 of Community, and was played by Brie Larson as a quirky, nerdy girl who enjoys a meet cute with Abed. That run was the year original creator Dan Harmon didn't produce, yet Rachel was a surprising highlight in an otherwise wonky series of episodes, so much so that Harmon decided she needed to stay once he returned.

Consequently she returned for Season 5, with her and Abed starting a genuine romance. Because Brie Larson was an in-demand actor even before she joined the MCU though, her stint on a quirky comedy was always in doubt, and after her run in Season 5 she disappeared from the show entirely, never to be mentioned again.

In a strange move though, the writers didn't even bother mentioning what happened to Rachel, despite having to have known in advance she'd leave eventually.

One minute Abed is in a relationship, and the next minute he's single and has forgotten entirely that he was in one. In Season 6 the character ponders about what happened to her, which almost saves the story with a meta joke, but isn't really enough to not make the sudden change as jarring as it is.
