10 TV Characters Who Died In 2020

2. Commander Data - Star Trek: Picard

Altered Carbon Anthony Mackie

Star Trek: Picard certainly left Trek fans divided over the series' merits, with the season finale courting particular controversy by "killing" Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) only to resurrect him moments later in a new "golem" body.

After his original body expired, though, Picard's consciousness was briefly able to meet with his android friend Commander Data (Brent Spiner) inside a quantum simulation created by Dr. Bruce Maddox (John Ales).

Data then asks Picard to terminate his consciousness, allowing him to experience the most human thing of all: death.

The result is a genuinely moving scene in which we see a visage of Data rapidly age and die, and though it's entirely possible that future seasons of Picard may fudge a way to bring Data back, it was a far more fitting death scene than his limp "demise" in Star Trek: Nemesis.
