10 TV Posters You Won't Believe

7. Anne's Makeover - Anne With An E

An adaptation of classic Canadian children's novel "Anne of Green Gables" is the last place you'd expect to see marketing controversy, and yet, here it is.

Ahead of its first season, Netflix came under fire after releasing a poster aimed at the U.S. market, in which many of Anne's (Amybeth McNulty) defining characteristics has been toned down via Photoshop "magic."

First and foremost, actress Amybeth McNulty's freckles have been concealed, the bags under her eyes removed, her buck teeth altered, and her hair neatened-up.

Also the entire poster has been tinted yellow to make her skin look less pallid and more tanned.

All of these changes run counter to how the character is supposed to look, and represent a cynical attempt by Netflix to give the character a makeover for American audiences who lack the same cultural association with the character as Canadians.

Netflix never even bothered to officially respond to the complaints, though, and soon enough people simply moved on.
