4. The Oblongs

Will Ferrell has achieved what few other cast members of Saturday Night Live have-a successful career outside the sketch comedy titan that is SNL. With blockbuster movies like Old School, Elf, Anchorman and most recently The Campaign, Ferrell is a quintessential funnyman and has a nearly universal popularity. Before achieving that he voiced the character of Bob Oblong for thirteen episodes of the animated series, The Oblongs. The show is anything but politically correct and this is the best part of its humor. The Oblongs are a family that lives in a community called the Valley community directly below a higher class community called The Hills. Due to the pollution of the higher class residents above them and radiation exposure from a power plant supplying upper class amenities, the residents of the Valley are all deformed or in some way disabled. While most definitely an adult show, the Oblongs takes the blue collar family dynamic of shows like The Simpsons and Married... with Children a step further by lampooning the more controversial issues facing a middle class, blue collar family. What makes the show funny is also what dooms it, as it takes issues of disability, alcoholism and sexuality and treats them humorously, but it is the kind of humor that is also insensitive. The Oblongs was cancelled after only eight episodes by the WB network but has since seen new life on Cartoon Networks Adult Swim, though no information about a revival has been forthcoming since 2010 making new episodes of this series unlikely.
