Few shows are as enigmatic, well-known, and iconic as The X-Files. Originally running from 1993 until 2002, the show incorporated elements from the crime and science-fiction genres in a plot that leaned heavily on mythological beliefs, superstition and conspiracy. The increasing acceptance of such things by audiences contributed to the success of the revival, which saw two new seasons air in 2016 and 2018.

The series is named after the fictional case files that FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny), and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) dedicate their time to solving. It is believed that many of these cases involve paranormal activity or some other inexplicable magic.

In a reversal of typical gender norms, it is Scully that embodies the world of rational thinking, science and logic, while Mulder is much happier treading down avenues of wild thinking.

From the iconic theme tune to the irresistible style, the legacy of The X-Files is profound. Its influence can be felt in shows such as Supernatural and Hannibal, to name but two that in some way have The X-Files in their DNA. Conspiracy theories have always had a small band of believers, but The X-Files brought them to the forefront of popular thinking.
