And finally we have the T-1000 himself, Robert Patrick, who was announced as part of the cast for the first season of Stargate Atlantis, playing the commander of Atlantis' military array, Colonel Marshall Sumner (Robert Patrick).

Even though press releases did confirm that Patrick would only be appearing in the series' first two episodes, few fans ended up reading that, and figured the Terminator 2 star would be around for a longer haul.

But as it turns out, Sumner is killed off in the second part of the pilot, when a wraith woman (Andee Frizzell) feeds on his youth, forcing comrade Major John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) to put him out of his misery with a bullet.

From then on, Sheppard becomes the new commander of the Atlantis' military arsenal and the series actual protagonist.

Basically this is another case of a respected, veteran character actor being cast in order to pass the torch to a younger, lesser-known actor.

It's a shame Patrick didn't stick around for longer, but he certainly did his job in acting as a stepping stone for Flanigan to take the lead.
