10 TV Shows That Led To Other TV Shows Being Cancelled (And Why)
5. Joan Of Arcadia Was Too Successful For Wonderfalls To Exist
One of the most underrated quirky character dramedies of the noughties (and let’s face it, is there any genre more likely to end up underrated when networks consistently refuse to spotlight this sort of show), Wonderfalls lasted only four weeks in its original 2004 run.
The show followed a slacker graduate who is given life advice by the talking totems around her gift shop workplace, and made for some occasionally moving fun as she attempted to follow their instruction and improve the lives of those around her.
If this sounds familiar, it may be because CBS’ Joan of Arcadia ran with a similar premise a year before Wonderfalls was released, wherein the heroine speaks to God and attempts to improve the lots of those in her life. Fox stalled Wonderfalls for a year for fear of the show looking like a carbon copy… which is exactly what Wonderfalls ended up looking like when it was released to so-so reviews after Joan of Arcadia’s successful first season.
