Rick and Morty is the personification of writing for yourself, and not worrying about who might or might not like the content.
This is the one of the most perpetually unapologetic series around. It pulls no punches, and while it is one of the most hilarious cartoons in existence, it also has many existential crisis moments, unafraid to shy away from the things that make life difficult. Harmon and Roiland are quick to show tough subjects such as the meaningless of existence, the realities of a failing marriage, and the realization that none of us are special, yet they keep you laughing until you cry consistently throughout.
That demonstrates the true brilliance of this show. It is beautiful how it doesn't try to hide the pain from us, instead helping us work through painful things.
