5. Francis Wolcott - Deadwood
Played by the greatly underrated Garret Dillahunt, Deadwood's season two antagonist Francis Wolcott was unlike anything the western drama had ever seen.
Whilst the show was known for its eclectic locals and dangerous killers, none quite matched the menace and unpredictable complexity of Wolcott, a sharply-dressed businessman with a delight for killing sex workers whenever the mood struck him.
Thanks in large part to Dillahunt's measured performance and menacingly soft-spoken drawl, Wolcott was able to freeze blood with just a word, but just as he seemed to make a place for himself as a future mainstay, he committed suicide after his vicious employer George Hearst rode into town.
Looking back, Wolcott's death feels a touch too rushed for such an important character departure, and it would've been great to see him stick around as a thorn in Deadwood's side.
