3. Happy!
Adaptations of comic legend's Grant Morrison work remain scarce, possibly because his distinct style is exceptionally hard to adapt. Thankfully, grouped with Crank co-director Brian Taylor, he has found the perfect kindred spirit to bring his specific flavour to live-action.
Focused on hitman Nick Sax - hilariously portrayed by Christopher Meloni - a filthy train-wreck of a human being, yet in a twist of fate becomes partnered with his estranged daughter's imaginary friend Happy (voiced cheerfully by Patton Oswald), in a bid to save his child from a chilling death.
Taylor infuses the material with all the pizzazz from his feature efforts in terms of production value, kinetic camerawork and crude attitude. His intricate involvement perfectly intertwines with Morrison’s source material in a faithful expansion of the comic.
Meloni is stellar as well, the criminally underused actor landing an ideal vehicle for his diverse talent, fully taking advantage of his intimidating alpha male presence yet coupling it with his off-the-wall comic timing as well.
The show certainly isn’t for everyone, but those in the mood for a fast and fierce ride with psychedelic visuals, vulgar humour and insanely gory action, this is your fix as its first season rushes by in an exhilarating cinematic blur.
